The Witness by Josh McDowell

The Witness

I have read several non-fiction books by Josh McDowell.  I especially like the Evidence That Demands a Verdict series.  I think Josh McDowell is very good at explaining apologetics and providing evidence for why we believe what we believe as Christians.  I think it is so important for all of us- especially young people- to be able to give a reason for what we believe.

I was excited when I was able to review The Witness- a non-fiction mystery/suspense book by Josh McDowell- for the Tyndale Blog Network.

Marwan Accad is co-owner of a private security firm with many wealthy, well-known clients.  While investigating the murder and kidnapping of the daughter and wife of a wealthy Egyptian businessman, Marwan discovers some things that put his life in great danger.  The businessman is killed and Marwan is on the run.  He may be the only witness that knows the truth, but he is also a suspect now, and he will have to live long enough to tell his story.
On the run, he meets and falls in love with Dalia Nour.  Together they flee the people out to get Marwan and run closer to the family and God that Dalia has neglected.

I have to admit that I didn't like this book as much as I hoped I would.  I thought the plot was a little hard to get into.  Constant action kept it interesting.  But, the characters were hard for me to get to know and some of the situations were VERY unbelievable.  I can accept a lot in fiction, but there has to be some reality.  McDowell tried to include apologetics in the story line.  There are several conversations where the characters discuss the truth of the Bible and the claims of Christ.  I'm glad this is included in a story that I think even non-Christians will be drawn to read, but I thought the conversations seemed forced and not really fitting with the story.

Overall, I think the suspense was interest-holding, but the lack of depth in the characters and the forced spiritual conversations made this a so-so read.

Disclaimer:  I was given a copy of this book to review.  I was not paid for my review nor forced to make a positive review in any way.
