First Things First- Kurt and Brenda Warner
In my year of reading memoirs, I chose to review First Things First about the Warner family.
I'm a football fan but honestly didn't know much about Kurt Warner except that he was a really good quarterback. I've never cheered for the Rams or the Cardinals- the two teams he played for, so I never really followed his career. I did know that he runs a charitable organization called First Things First and that he professes to be a Christian.
The book First Things First is written by Kurt and his wife Brenda and was written because of an article which came out in the New York Times in which the Warner children (there are seven of them) related some of their family rules. Kurt and Brenda say they received so much mail and so many comments and questions about those rules, that they decided to write this book to answer some of those questions.
The first part of the book gives a brief biography of Kurt and Brenda before they met and each of them talk about how they met and how their relationship began. The true story is a little different from the story the media has sometimes told. The rest of the book is a look at some of the popular Warner family rules and how they play out in every day life.
I was impressed while reading this book because the Warner family sounds like our family with a few more kids and lots more money. The book makes them seem so normal. I think that's exactly what they intended, so they accomplished it well. I like the way the chapters go back and forth from the point of view of Kurt to that of Brenda. I am especially glad to see an NFL big name player who is seeking to honor God in his marriage and family!
A neat extra was the set of four special trading cards in the back that feature Kurt as the Cardinals quarterback and have a short summary of his statement of following Christ and a prayer to pray to believe in Christ.
My verdict: a very enjoyable visit with a very interesting family.
