Lovelier Than Daylight by Rosslyn Elliott

I've been very pleased lately to discover some gems in my review books.  Lovelier Than Daylight is another one of these, and I will certainly be looking up Rosslyn Elliott's previous books!

Lovelier Than Daylight is historical fiction based on the actual Westerville Whiskey Wars of 1879 in Westerville, Ohio.  Susanna Hanby is searching for her sister whose family has been tragically affected by the evils of alcohol.  She is an outspoken temperance advocate in an alcohol free town.  Johann Geire is the son of a German beer maker who is supplying beer to the man daring to open a saloon in Westerville.  As the two begin to work together to find Susanna's sister, the morals and values of both will be challenged by the relationship that develops.

I loved Susanna.  She was a wonderful real and outspoken, strong heroine.  She wasn't perfect.  She grew in character as the story progressed.

I love that the book was based on actual historical events.  At the end of the book Rosslyn Elliott takes the time to tell how her characters and the events of the story match up with the actual happenings of the Whiskey Wars.

The story flows well through most of the book.  There were a few times I thought conversations were a little stilted and didn't flow with what was going on.  But I really enjoyed the book.  I believe this is the third in a series, and I'll be looking up the others.

I give this one 4 stars and a PG for content.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher for review purposes.  All opinions expressed are entirely my own.
