Harriet Beamer Strikes Gold by Joyce Magnin

Leah Courtney

I discovered Joyce Magnin when I read The Prayers of Agnes Sparrow. I then kept on reading any of her books that I could find. I enjoy the charm of the small towns in her stories, the quirky and likable characters, and the touching stories.

Most recently I read Harriet Beamer Strikes Gold. This one is apparently the second Harriet Beamer book. I don't know how I've missed the first one, but I'll be going back to read it.

Harriet Beamer is a little bored with her new life living with her son and daughter-in-law and is missing her best friend from home. But, things are soon to be different when Harriet decides to invest in a gold mine.

Harriet is such a likable character. Typical of Magnin's characters she's pretty quirky with her high topped Converse sneakers and her scooter to ride around town. Her adventures are sometimes humorous and sometimes touching. Magnin's writing style is plain and straight forward. There isn't anything extraordinary about the book, but it is an easy read and one I didn't want to put down. I really enjoyed it.

I give this one 4 stars and a G for content.
