Catherine Campbell is a women's speaker and wife of a pastor. She lives in Ireland. She is also the mother of two severely disabled little girls, now in heaven. Under the Rainbow is a memoir of her time with her two girls.
Catherine's first daughter was born with severe microcephaly, a condition not detected until she was about seven months old. Next was born a son, free from disability. when her third child was born, doctors at first seemed to see no disability, but soon it was discovered that she also suffered from microcephaly. In Under the Rainbow Catherine tells of the birth and life of her two girls and of the lessons that God taught her all along the way.
I must admit that occasionally Under the Rainbow was difficult to read. I was sad. It was hard to think of any child suffering the way that Catherine's girls suffered. It was hard to think of losing your children in the way she did. There were times that I wanted to stop reading, to distance myself from the pain.
But, Catherine's story was also one of encouragement and inspiration. As Catherine faces the trials in her life, she also experiences God's grace in a real and personal way. She grows closer to God. In her pain, she also has moments of real joy.
So I was glad that I read Under the Rainbow. I'm glad that Catherine was willing to share her story so that others can be drawn closer to God. I am sure that it is also a great inspiration to anyone who is going through a similar trial, anyone who experiences the pain of losing a child. I was inspired by reading of Catherine's reaction to the suffering in her life, and I was convicted to look at the areas of the pain in my life and consider my response. Is it one of bitterness and anger or one of trust in God's grace?
