Review of Hidden Falls Episodes 2 and 3 (A Series Novel by Olivia Newport)

Leah Courtney
I posted a review for episode one of this new series novel by Olivia Newport here. The premise of this novel is that the characters are introduced and the action develops in episodes- similar to a t.v. drama. There will be a total of 13 episodes by the end, releasing between January and April.

I was interested after episode one but was a little skeptical of how this would work. After all, this could end up being a very expensive novel after paying $2.99 for each episode.

In the first episode, I thought the introduction of the characters was handled well, and the story was certainly left with a cliff hanger, leaving me wanting to read more.

When I had the opportunity to review the next two episodes, I was eager to see if they continued to be an interesting story line.

Unfortunately I was disappointed.

Although the first episode was left as a cliff hanger, nothing is resolved in episode two- sorry for the spoiler. The same is true with a cliff hanger at the end of two. So, I'm left frustrated with no resolution and only more confusion.

There is a tremendous cast of characters to keep up with. By the time I started the second episode, I had forgotten who was who. Thankfully there was a cast of characters listed at the beginning. It still is really confusing to jump back into an episode with a gap between. The episodes are so short that many avid readers will read them in one or two sittings, as I did. Then there is a gap of time- where you're probably reading something else- before you come back to it. It left me trying to remember who was doing what.

I also really don't like so many story lines going on at once. It sort of works in t.v.- although I'm not a fan of an ongoing t.v. drama either. But in a novel, it's difficult to keep up with and makes the action choppy. The story just doesn't flow.

I'm not really impressed with these, and I'm glad I didn't go ahead and buy the next few to see if I liked them. I give it 3 stars and a PG13 for content.

Disclosure: I received a free copy of these books from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.
