Review of Gathered Waters by Cara Luecht

Occasionally I pick up a book and begin reading and find myself so drawn in that I can feel what's happening in the story. When I know that the book is based on actual historical events, it's especially compelling. Gathered Waters was such a book.

In the beginning the book was a little "heavy" feeling, and I wasn't sure that I was even going to like it. But the further I read, I was certainly drawn in. And while I wanted to keep reading and know what was going to happen in the lives of the characters, I also didn't want to come to the end of the story. I wanted more.

The story is told in first person of the main character. Her character is so well-developed that I felt as if I had made a friend in getting to know her. Sometimes it's difficult for the other characters in a story with first person perspective to be well-developed, but that wasn't a problem with Gathered Waters. Through Brianna's thoughts and actions we get to know the other characters very well.

When I reached the end of the book, I felt as if I were left hanging. Although it had an excellent conclusion (which I won't give more information about), I knew the characters in the story were real- based on the great grandparents of the author. And I wanted to know what happened next for them. At the end of the book is a transcript of original journal writings that allowed the author to come up with her story in Gathered Waters. So, not only do readers get to hear the true story behind the book, I was able to get a glimpse of the further lives of the characters.

Gathered Waters is one I will definitely recommend and share. I give it 5 stars (more if my rating system allowed) and a PG-13 rating for some violent and scary situations. A Word from the Author:

I never planned to be a writer. In fact, it took me a while to finish college. But I did, and here I am. And I now I can’t imagine not being a writer.

By day, I am an English Instructor for a local college, Marketing Manager for Degnan Design Builders, Inc., mother to four amazing children, and wife to an eternally patient and supportive husband.

In the evening, when I can squirrel away some quiet time, I read and write historical fiction.

I have a B.A. in English Lit. from UW Whitewater and an M.F.A in Creative Writing from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, NJ.

They want to worship as their hearts demand...but is it something they can give up everything for?

Brianna has only ever been what her life demanded. A wife, a hostess, a mother. But when a stand her husband takes ostracizes them from the Lutheran church that controls so much of life in Sweden, Brianna finds herself needing to find a strength beyond her station...a strength that will see her through prejudice and persecution and to a home she never dreamed she would find.

Based on the true story of the author s family s journey from Sweden to America, this sweeping saga paints the brilliance of new faith, the bravery of a new land...and the beauty of plunging beneath the waters and emerging a new person, capable of what one never thought one could do.
